Learn MoreDemolition Permitting
Stillwater, the "Birthplace of Minnesota," is a historic town with rich and varied architectural heritage. The preservation, protection and use of historic properties is critical to maintaining the City's character, sense of place, and legacy. Demolition is forever and once a building is gone, it takes away another piece of the City's character.
Generally speaking, the City of Stillwater prohibits the exterior demolition of any structure constructed prior to 1946. Demolition means any act or process that destroys in part or in whole so, even partial demolition of a structure may require a Demolition Permit.
If you are proposing to remove portions of the exterior of a pre-1946 structure, your project may be subject to review by the Heritage Preservation Commission. Please contact the Community Development Department at (651) 430-8820 to discuss demolition options prior to submitting an application for demolition.
Planning applications can be submitted via mail or emailed to the Planning Department. To pay the application fee, you can submit a check payable to the City of Stillwater or pay via credit card over the phone, 651-430-8820.
