Disposal of Large Items

Before you throw items away, check out some ways your can share items that are still useable to others. There are people all around the Twin Cities looking for furniture, windows, doors, large toys, and other useful items. For more information look at, Reduce through Reuse.

Bulky Items 

Any item that is too large to fit inside the cart, or a garbage bag, is considered a bulky item. You must arrange for curbside collection by contacting Waste Management at 952-890-1100 or submitting an online request.

A yearly limit of 2 bulky items per residence is provided at no charge. Additional items can be collected for a cost of $15 per item.

Examples of bulky items:

  • Mattresses and Box Springs - Second Chance Recycling accepts these for a small fee.
  • Carpet - Cut into 4 foot sections, roll and bundle. Weight limit of 35 pounds per roll.
  • Furniture
  • Windows and Doors

Household Appliances

If your item is not in usable condition, call Waste Management at 952-890-1100 to arrange for curbside collection.

A yearly limit of 3 appliances per residence is provided at no charge. Additional collection can be arranged with Waste Management for an additional charge.

Examples of Household appliances:

  • Refrigerators and freezers
  • Stoves and microwave ovens
  • Washers and dryers
  • Air conditioners
  • Trash compactors or garbage disposals
  • Furnaces, pool heaters, and water heaters

Construction Debris

Visit Washington County's Disposal Directory to find a location to recycle or dispose of construction debris.

Construction Dumpters or Bagster Bags can be used to recycle construction materials as well.  Some items such as concrete, tile, lumber, metals, masonry, carpet, insulation can be recycled.  Talk with a local garbage/recycling hauler for more information.  Remember, any dumpster or bagster bag that is placed in the street or right-of-way (boulevard) must obtain an obstruction permitfrom the Stillwater Engineering Department.
