Forestry
Buckthorn, Brush and Yard Waste Pickup and Disposal
The City no longer picks up buckthorn from residents. Property owners are encouraged to remove buckthorn from their property. Learn more about identifying, controlling and removing buckthorn from the Minnesota DNR website.
Waste Management offers curbside pickup for small amounts of brush and yard waste in compostable bags. For larger amounts, contact Waste Management at 952-890-1100 beforehand for details.
Brush and yard waste may also be dropped off at brush/compost collection sites. While Stillwater does not operate a collection site, there are nearby options:
- The Washington County Northern Yard Waste Site is free and open to all Washington County residents. The address is 5527 170th St N, Hugo, MN 55038
- Privately-owned sites;
Tree Trimming/Removal or Transplanting
City crews prune woody plants growing in city parks and boulevards. This is done to keep sidewalks clear and to create clearance for municipal service trucks.
If you have a tree on your property that needs trimming, replanting, or removal, you must use a licensed contractor.
Tree Cutting Permit
You are required to obtain a permit for tree cutting if any of the following apply:
- The tree(s) is on a ravine, along bluffs, or on slopes greater than 24%
- The tree(s) is in the St. Croix River Corridor or on a lakeshore
- The removal is associated with the construction, addition, installation or alteration of any structure; the extraction, clearing or other alteration of land; or the division of land into two or more parcels for the purpose of transfer of title or building development

Tree Planting
There are many thing to consider when planting trees near the street or in a City right-of-way. Prior approval is required. Contact the City's natural resources technician before you plant.
For City of Stillwater Residents: Free wood chips are available throughout the year.
The wood chips are located next to the new dog park and JC Ballfields off of Myrtle Street. Stop by and help yourself.
